**Hook-Story-Offer is a three-part selling framework taught by Russell Brunson. The hook stops the scroll, the story builds the perceived value of what you are selling, and the offer tells viewers exactly what they get and how to get it. In a Reel, most of the runtime goes to the story.**

**Quick answer:** Hook-Story-Offer = **stop the scroll → tell a short story that makes the offer valuable → make one clear offer**. In a 30-second Reel: about 3 s hook, 19 s story, 8 s offer. Copy the template below, or [build a Hook-Story-Offer script in the free template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=hso).

## What is Hook-Story-Offer?

Hook-Story-Offer is a three-part selling framework from marketer **Russell Brunson**, co-founder of ClickFunnels. His summary: a hook "is the thing that gets them to stop scrolling", the goal of the story "is to increase the perceived value" of what you sell, and then you make them an offer.

Brunson applies it to every piece of a funnel: the ad, the landing page, the sales page. If something isn't converting, he says, the problem is almost always the hook, the story or the offer.

### Where it comes from

Brunson says he came up with the framework _after_ the first editions of _DotCom Secrets_ and _Expert Secrets_ were published. He then made it Secret #3 of _Traffic Secrets_ ("Hook, Story, Offer, and the Attractive Character") and added it to the rewritten editions of the other two books.

So if you have an early copy of _DotCom Secrets_, it won't be in there. The updated editions cover it.

## Hook-Story-Offer at a glance

| Step | What to say | 30 s Reel | 60 s Reel |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hook** | A line or visual that stops the scroll and hints at the story. | 0–3 s | 0–3 s |
| **Story** | A short, true moment: the struggle, the turning point, the discovery. It makes the offer feel valuable. | 3–22 s | 3–45 s |
| **Offer** | What you're offering, what they get, and exactly how to get it. | 22–30 s | 45–60 s |

## How to use Hook-Story-Offer in a Reel

1. **Hook: tease the story's ending.** "I lost 3 clients in one week, and it was the best thing that happened to my business." The viewer stays to find out how.
2. **Story: one moment, not your whole life.** Pick the single scene that explains why the offer exists: the low point, what you tried, what finally worked. Keep it true and specific.
3. **Make the story the proof.** The story should show the viewer they can get the same result. That's what raises the value of the offer.
4. **Offer: one thing, one way to get it.** A free guide via a comment keyword, a product at the link in bio. Name it and say what's inside.

🪝

#### The hook points to the story

If the hook promises one thing and the story is about another, viewers feel tricked.

📖

#### The story sells, not the pitch

Most of the runtime goes to the story. The offer is short because the story did the work.

🎁

#### Free offers count

On Reels the offer is often a free lead magnet. It still needs a clear what and how.

## Hook-Story-Offer examples: 3 Reel scripts

All three are original scripts written for this guide.

### Example 1: Fitness (30 s)

Offer: a free beginner plan (lead magnet).

| Beat | Voiceover | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **Hook** 0–3 s | "I couldn't do a single push-up at 34." | 0 push-ups at 34 |
| **Story** 3–22 s | "I tried the big workout plans and quit every time by week two. What worked was stupidly small: two wall push-ups every time I made coffee. Then incline. Then knees. Four months later I did ten in a row on the floor, and I cried a little." | Wall → incline → knees → floor |
| **Offer** 22–30 s | "I wrote the whole 16-week ladder down. Comment LADDER and I'll send it to you free." | Comment LADDER 👇 |

### Example 2: Personal finance (45 s)

Offer: a paid budgeting spreadsheet.

| Beat | Voiceover | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **Hook** 0–3 s | "My wife and I stopped fighting about money with one spreadsheet tab." | 1 tab. No more money fights. |
| **Story** 3–35 s | "Every month-end was the same argument: where did it all go? We tried apps, we tried envelopes. Then we made one tab called 'Ours, Mine, Yours'. Shared bills in one column, and a fixed amount each that nobody has to explain. The fights stopped because the questions stopped." | Ours · Mine · Yours |
| **Offer** 35–45 s | "I turned it into a ready-to-use template with the formulas done. It's in my bio." | Template → link in bio |

### Example 3: Creator / business (60 s)

Offer: a paid 1:1 content audit.

| Beat | Voiceover | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **Hook** 0–3 s | "I lost three clients in one week, and it saved my agency." | Lost 3 clients in 1 week |
| **Story** 3–45 s | "All three said the same thing: the content looked good but didn't bring leads. So I stopped guessing. I pulled the top Reels in each client's niche, sorted by views, and transcribed them. The winners weren't prettier. They opened with a problem and ended with one clear ask. We rebuilt our scripts around that, and the next quarter was our best." | Stop guessing → study the winners → rebuild |
| **Offer** 45–60 s | "I now do this as a one-hour audit of your last 20 Reels. Five spots a month. DM me AUDIT." | DM AUDIT · 5 spots/month |

## What IShort's reel data shows

Only 10 of 653 classified scripts in our sample followed Hook-Story-Offer end to end, too few to publish a reliable number. Most viral reels use a lighter structure, so the useful signal is in how they open:

73% of scripts named the topic in their first sentence; the median hook was 12 words.

The median English script was 166 words, spoken at about 3.4 words per second.

| Hook type (first sentence) | Reels | Median views |
|---|---|---|
| Number / list (“5 habits that…”) | 30 | 448k |
| Question (“Ever wondered why…?”) | 82 | 386k |
| Stop / don't (“Stop doing this…”) | 21 | 368k (small sample) |
| Bold claim | 74 | 230k |
| Personal story (“I…”) | 79 | 116k |

*IShort's sample: 1,227 public reels that IShort users chose to transcribe (July–September 2026). 653 transcripts (567 English, 86 Hindi in Devanagari) could be classified by keyword rules. Because users mostly transcribe reels that already did well (median 206k views), treat these as patterns in successful reels, not proof of cause. ## Hook-Story-Offer vs AIDA vs PAS

| | Hook-Story-Offer | AIDA | PAS |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Beats** | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| **Main engine** | A personal story | Building desire | Relief from a pain |
| **Needs** | A real story and an offer | A clear benefit to show | A pain the viewer feels |
| **Best for** | Creators, coaches, founders | Products, launches | Fixes, services |

AIDA and Hook-Story-Offer overlap: the hook is Attention, and the story covers Interest and Desire. The difference is that HSO insists the middle is a _story_. ## When not to use Hook-Story-Offer

- **You have no offer.** Without the offer it's just a story Reel. That's fine, but use a storytelling framework instead.
- **You don't have a true story.** An invented struggle is easy to spot and damages trust.
- **Quick tips and how-tos.** A viewer who wants three steps doesn't want your backstory. Use a listicle or PAS.
- **Every post.** If every Reel ends in a pitch, people stop watching the stories.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Hook-Story-Offer?

Hook-Story-Offer is Russell Brunson's three-part selling framework. The hook stops people scrolling, the story increases the perceived value of what you sell, and the offer tells them exactly what they get and how to get it. It works for ads, sales pages and short videos.

### Which Russell Brunson book covers Hook-Story-Offer?

Brunson teaches it as Secret #3 of Traffic Secrets. He has said he came up with the framework after the first editions of DotCom Secrets and Expert Secrets were published, and added it to the rewritten editions of both books.

### How long should the story be in a Reel?

Give the story most of the runtime: roughly 3 to 22 seconds in a 30-second Reel, or 3 to 45 seconds in a 60-second Reel. Keep the hook to about 3 seconds and the offer to the last 8 to 15 seconds.

### Does the offer have to be paid?

No. On Reels the offer is often free, like a guide, template or checklist you send when someone comments a keyword. It still needs to be specific: what it is, what is inside and exactly how to get it.

### How is Hook-Story-Offer different from AIDA?

They overlap: the hook matches Attention and the offer matches Action. The difference is the middle. AIDA builds interest and desire any way you like, while Hook-Story-Offer does it through a story that makes the offer feel valuable.
