A listicle reel script is a short video built as a numbered list. It has four parts: a Hook that promises a number ("3 apps that…"), the Items delivered one beat each, a strongest-last Payoff item, and a CTA. A countdown is the same format numbered in reverse.

## Listicle reel script at a glance

| Step | What to say | 30 s Reel (3 items) | 60 s Reel (5 items) |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hook** | Promise the number and the payoff. Tease the last item. | 0–4 s | 0–5 s |
| **Item 1** | A strong opener, not your weakest item. | 4–11 s | 5–14 s |
| **Middle items** | One idea, one sentence, one on-screen label each. | 11–18 s | 14–41 s |
| **Payoff item** | Your best item, with a bit more detail. | 18–27 s | 41–55 s |
| **CTA** | Save, or comment which one they'll try. | 27–30 s | 55–60 s |

## What is a listicle reel script?

The listicle is borrowed from blog writing. On short video it works because the number in the hook tells the viewer exactly what they're getting and roughly how long it will take.

Each item is also a mini-hook, so attention resets every few seconds. And list reels are easy to save, which makes them a natural fit for reference content.

🔢

#### A number in the hook

"3 apps", "5 mistakes". Specific, finite, scannable.

⏱️

#### Equal beats

Each item gets the same shape: label, one line, one visual.

🏆

#### Best item last

A reason to stay, and a strong ending.

## How to order the items

Memory research backs a simple rule. Bennet Murdock's 1962 study of the **serial-position effect** found people recall the first and last items in a list better than the middle ones.

Nelson Cowan's 2001 review put short-term memory at about **four chunks**. That is why three to five items is the sweet spot for a spoken reel.

| Position | Put here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First | Your second-best item | Earns the next few seconds |
| Middle | Quick, solid items | Least remembered, so keep them short |
| Last | Your best or most surprising item | Most remembered; rewards viewers who stayed |

## How to write a listicle reel script

1. **Write 7 items, keep 3–5.** Cut anything you wouldn't defend in the comments.
2. **Hook with the number and a tease.** "5 grocery swaps, and number 5 saves the most."
3. **Give every item the same shape.** Number + label on screen, one spoken sentence, one visual.
4. **Skip the recap.** Once the last item lands, go straight to the CTA.

## Listicle vs myth-busting vs Problem-Solution-Proof

| Format | Best for | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|
| **Listicle** | Tools, tips, swaps, resources | Middle items get skipped |
| [Myth-busting](/myth-busting-reel-script.html) | Correcting one popular belief | Needs a strong source |
| [Problem-Solution-Proof](/problem-solution-proof-framework.html) | One fix you can demo | Needs real proof |

You can mix them. "3 myths about protein" is a listicle where each item is a mini myth-bust.

## When not to use a listicle

- **One idea deserves the whole reel.** Splitting it into items dilutes it.
- **You have 7+ items.** Make a carousel or a series instead of a rushed reel.
- **The items need proof to be believed.** Use [Problem-Solution-Proof](/problem-solution-proof-framework.html) for the best one instead.

## What IShort's reel data shows

Listicles were the most common named structure we found: 88 of 653 classified scripts (13.5%), with a median of 275k views and 3.95% engagement. Hooks that open with a number had the highest median of any hook type (448k views, 30 reels).

73% of scripts named the topic in their first sentence; the median hook was 12 words.

The median English script was 166 words, spoken at about 3.4 words per second.

| Hook type (first sentence) | Reels | Median views |
|---|---|---|
| Number / list (“5 habits that…”) | 30 | 448k |
| Question (“Ever wondered why…?”) | 82 | 386k |
| Stop / don't (“Stop doing this…”) | 21 | 368k (small sample) |
| Bold claim | 74 | 230k |
| Personal story (“I…”) | 79 | 116k |

*IShort's sample: 1,227 public reels that IShort users chose to transcribe (July–September 2026). 653 transcripts (567 English, 86 Hindi in Devanagari) could be classified by keyword rules. Because users mostly transcribe reels that already did well (median 206k views), treat these as patterns in successful reels, not proof of cause. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is a listicle reel?

A listicle reel is a short video structured as a numbered list, such as 3 apps, 5 mistakes or 7 foods. The hook promises the number, each item gets its own short beat with on-screen text, and the reel ends with the strongest item and a call to action.

### How many items should a listicle reel have?

Three to five for most Reels. That gives each item 5 to 10 seconds in a 30 to 60 second video. Memory research suggests people hold only about four chunks in mind at once, so longer lists work better as carousels or saved references than as spoken reels.

### Should I save the best item for last?

Usually yes. Put a strong item first to keep people past the first few seconds, and the strongest item last so the reel ends on a high. Memory research on the serial-position effect found people recall the first and last items of a list best.

### What is the difference between a listicle and a countdown reel?

They use the same structure. A listicle counts up (1, 2, 3) and a countdown counts down (3, 2, 1) to a number one. A countdown makes the promise of a best item explicit, which gives viewers a reason to stay until the end.

### How do I stop viewers leaving halfway through a list?

Tease the last item in the hook, keep every item to one idea and one sentence, number each item on screen, and cut any item you would not defend. Some creators also ask viewers to comment which item they already knew.
