A myth-busting reel script corrects a popular belief in 15–60 seconds. It follows the "truth sandwich" from debunking research: state the Fact, name the Myth once with a warning, explain the Fallacy (why it's wrong), then repeat the Fact with a tip and a CTA.

## Myth-busting reel script at a glance

| Step | What to say | 30 s Reel | 60 s Reel |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Hook** | Call out the belief: "Stop doing X." Label it as false on screen. | 0–3 s | 0–5 s |
| **Fact** | The correct idea, stated simply. | 3–9 s | 5–15 s |
| **Myth** | Name the myth once, with a warning. | 9–13 s | 15–22 s |
| **Fallacy** | Why it's wrong, plus where it came from. Name your source. | 13–23 s | 22–45 s |
| **Fact + tip + CTA** | Repeat the fact, give one action, then the CTA. | 23–30 s | 45–60 s |

## What is a myth-busting reel script?

Myth-busting is a contrarian format with a job to do: fix a wrong belief. The hook is naturally strong, because it challenges something the viewer thinks they already know.

The risk is that you repeat the myth so often it's the only thing people remember. Debunking research has a structure built to avoid this.

**The truth sandwich:** _The Debunking Handbook 2020_ (Lewandowsky, Cook and 20 co-authors) recommends **Fact → Myth → Fallacy → Fact**. Lead with the truth, warn before the myth, explain why it's wrong, and end on the truth.

## How to write a myth-busting reel script

1. **Pick a myth your audience actually believes.** Look at the comments on top reels in your niche. The same wrong belief will keep coming up.
2. **Find the source before you script.** One official guideline, study or doc. No source, no reel.
3. **Hook on the belief, label it false.** A red ✗ or "MYTH" on screen from frame one.
4. **Get to the fact fast.** Within the first few seconds, before viewers leave with the myth.
5. **Explain the fallacy, don't just deny it.** Why do people believe it? A good "why" replaces the myth instead of leaving a gap.
6. **End on the fact and one action.** The last thing on screen should be the truth, not the myth.

## Myth-busting examples (3 original Reel scripts)

Each is a 30-second script we wrote. Check the claims against current guidance in your country before you film.

### Example 1: Fitness (30 s)

| Time | What you say | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **0–3 s · Hook** | "Stop doing crunches to lose belly fat." | ❌ Crunches burn belly fat |
| **3–9 s · Fact** | "You can't choose where your body loses fat. Overall fat loss comes from your diet and total activity." | ✅ You can't spot-reduce fat |
| **9–13 s · Myth** | "The myth is that working a muscle burns the fat on top of it." | Myth: work the muscle, lose the fat |
| **13–23 s · Fallacy** | "It feels true because you feel the burn in your abs. But that burn is the muscle working, not fat leaving that spot." | The burn ≠ fat loss |
| **23–30 s · Fact + CTA** | "So train your whole body and fix your diet. Keep crunches for strength. Save this." | Whole body + diet ✅ |

### Example 2: Personal finance (30 s)

| Time | What you say | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **0–3 s · Hook** | "'Renting is throwing money away.' Not always." | ❌ Renting = wasted money |
| **3–9 s · Fact** | "Buying has its own costs you never get back: loan interest, maintenance, taxes and fees." | ✅ Owners have sunk costs too |
| **9–13 s · Myth** | "The myth says rent is wasted but a mortgage is all savings." | Myth: mortgage = savings |
| **13–23 s · Fallacy** | "Early on, much of a loan payment is interest, which you also never get back. The fair comparison is rent versus those unrecoverable costs, not rent versus the full EMI." | Compare rent vs interest + costs |
| **23–30 s · Fact + CTA** | "Do the math for your city before you decide. Comment RENT for the checklist." | Comment RENT |

### Example 3: Creator / business (30 s)

| Time | What you say | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|
| **0–3 s · Hook** | "Posting more won't fix your views." | ❌ More posts = more views |
| **3–9 s · Fact** | "On my account, one reel with a strong hook did more than five with weak ones." | ✅ Better hooks > more posts |
| **9–13 s · Myth** | "The myth is that the algorithm just rewards volume." | Myth: volume wins |
| **13–23 s · Fallacy** | "Big accounts post often, so it looks like volume works. Sort their reels by views and, on many accounts, you'll see a few hits doing most of the work." | Check: sort by views |
| **23–30 s · Fact + CTA** | "Study the hits, then post fewer, better reels. Follow for how." | Fewer, better ✅ |

## Myth-busting vs PAS vs listicle

| Format | Hook shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| **Myth-busting** | "Stop believing X" | Correcting one belief |
| [PAS](/pas-framework.html) | "You have problem X" | Selling a fix |
| [Listicle](/listicle-reel-script.html) | "3 myths about X" | Several small myths |

## When not to use a myth-busting script

- **You can't cite a source.** Then it's an opinion. Say so, and frame it as contrarian.
- **The "myth" is a matter of taste.** "Morning workouts are overrated" is a debate, not a debunk.
- **It's medical, legal or tax advice for individuals.** Keep it general and point to a professional.
- **You'd have to name and shame a person.** Bust the idea, not the creator.

## Common myth-busting mistakes

| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Repeating the myth 3–4 times | State it once, clearly labelled. Repeat the fact instead. |
| Ending on the myth | The last line and last on-screen text should be the fact. |
| "Studies show" with no study | Name the source on screen and link it in the caption. |
| Mocking people who believed it | Explain why it seemed true. Viewers who believed it stay. |

## What IShort's reel data shows

Only 23 of 653 classified scripts matched a myth-busting structure: too few to publish a reliable median. The closest hook type, “stop / don't” openers, appeared in 21 reels with a median of 368k views (small sample).

73% of scripts named the topic in their first sentence; the median hook was 12 words.

The median English script was 166 words, spoken at about 3.4 words per second.

| Hook type (first sentence) | Reels | Median views |
|---|---|---|
| Number / list (“5 habits that…”) | 30 | 448k |
| Question (“Ever wondered why…?”) | 82 | 386k |
| Stop / don't (“Stop doing this…”) | 21 | 368k (small sample) |
| Bold claim | 74 | 230k |
| Personal story (“I…”) | 79 | 116k |

*IShort's sample: 1,227 public reels that IShort users chose to transcribe (July–September 2026). 653 transcripts (567 English, 86 Hindi in Devanagari) could be classified by keyword rules. Because users mostly transcribe reels that already did well (median 206k views), treat these as patterns in successful reels, not proof of cause. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is a myth-busting reel?

A myth-busting reel is a short video that corrects a popular but wrong belief in your niche. The best ones state the correct fact first, name the myth once, explain why it is wrong and end by repeating the fact with something the viewer can do.

### What is the fact-myth-fallacy-fact structure?

It is the debunking structure recommended in The Debunking Handbook 2020 by Stephan Lewandowsky, John Cook and co-authors. Lead with the fact, warn that a myth is coming and state it once, explain the fallacy or why the myth is misleading, then finish by repeating the fact. It is often called a truth sandwich.

### Should I start a myth-busting reel with the myth?

You can open on the myth as a hook, because it is what stops the scroll, but label it as false straight away on screen and move to the fact within a few seconds. Avoid repeating the myth throughout the reel, and end on the fact, not the myth.

### How do I back up a myth-busting reel?

Name your source on screen, such as an official guideline, a study or a product's own documentation. Show it if you can. In health and money niches, link the source in the caption, and avoid absolute claims the source does not make.

### What is the difference between myth-busting and contrarian content?

Myth-busting corrects something that is factually wrong, with evidence. Contrarian content argues against a popular opinion or practice. Both use the same hook, but contrarian reels need a clear argument rather than a source, and should say it is an opinion.
