**A reel script framework is a fixed order of beats for a short video: a hook, a middle that builds tension or value, and a call to action. This guide compares 12 frameworks, including AIDA, PAS, Hook-Story-Offer, Before-After-Bridge, the Pixar Story Spine, StoryBrand SB7 and SCQA.**

**Quick answer:** For most Reels, start with **PAS** (pain-point tips), **AIDA** (products and offers) or a **listicle** (quick education). Use **Hook-Story-Offer** or the **Story Spine** when you have a real story. The table below compares all 12. To fill one in, use the [free video script template tool](/video-script-template.html).

## What is a script framework?

A script framework is a fixed order of beats. Each beat has one job: stop the scroll, create tension, deliver the value, ask for an action. You swap in your own topic, and the structure keeps the Reel moving.

Two families matter for short video:

- **Copywriting frameworks** (AIDA, PAS, BAB, 4 Ps) come from advertising. They move a viewer toward one action.
- **Storytelling frameworks** (Hero's Journey, Story Spine, StoryBrand) come from narrative. They make people care, then the action follows.

| Shows a transformation or result | [Before-After-Bridge](/before-after-bridge.html) | The contrast does the work |
| Tells your story and ends with an offer | [Hook-Story-Offer](/hook-story-offer.html) | The story raises the offer's value |
| Tells a story with no pitch | Pixar Story Spine or [Hero's Journey](/heros-journey-short-video.html) | Beginning, middle, end in seconds |
| Demos a product that needs proof | [Problem-Solution-Proof](/problem-solution-proof-framework.html) | Ends on evidence |
| Teaches several quick tips | [Listicle](/listicle-reel-script.html) | Numbers keep people watching |
| Challenges a common belief | [Myth-Busting](/myth-busting-reel-script.html) | Disagreement holds attention |
| Explains your brand or service | StoryBrand SB7 | Makes the customer the hero |
| Explains news, data or a decision | SCQA | Logical, answer-led |

## The 12 frameworks, one by one

Each has its beats with timings for a 30-second Reel and an example opening line we wrote. Eight have their own full guide with three example scripts.

### AIDA

The classic persuasion sequence: grab attention, build interest, create desire, ask for action.

| Attention | Interest | Desire | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 s | 3–12 s | 12–24 s | 24–30 s |

**Example hook:** "You don't need a gym to build your legs." **Best for:** Product demos, offers, lead magnets. [Full AIDA guide](/aida-framework.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=aida)

### PAS (Problem-Agitate-Solve)

Open on a pain the viewer already feels, show what it costs them, then deliver the fix.

| Problem | Agitate | Solve + CTA |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 s | 4–14 s | 14–30 s |

**Example hook:** "If your lower back hurts after deadlifts, it's not your back's fault." **Best for:** Fixes, mistakes, services. [Full PAS guide](/pas-framework.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=pas)

|---|---|---|
| 0–3 s | 3–22 s | 22–30 s |

**Example hook:** "I couldn't do a single push-up at 34." **Best for:** Creators and coaches selling something. [Full Hook-Story-Offer guide](/hook-story-offer.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=hso)

| 0–6 s | 6–16 s | 16–30 s |

**Example hook:** "This was my desk setup a year ago." **Best for:** Results and makeovers. [Full Before-After-Bridge guide](/before-after-bridge.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=bab)

|---|---|---|---|
| 0–4 s | 4–16 s | 16–24 s | 24–30 s |

|---|---|---|
| 0–3 s | 3–26 s | 26–30 s |

**Example hook:** "3 free apps that replaced my editor." **Best for:** Tips, tools, quick education. [Full Listicle / Countdown guide](/listicle-reel-script.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=listicle)

**Example hook:** "Posting every day is killing your reach." **Best for:** Authority, debate, saves. [Full Myth-Busting / Contrarian guide](/myth-busting-reel-script.html) · [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=myth)

### Pixar Story Spine

An improv tool created by Kenn Adams and later taught to Pixar's writers: fill in 'Once upon a time… Every day… But one day… Because of that… Until finally… And ever since then…'

| Once upon a time / Every day | But one day | Because of that (×2–3) | Until finally / Ever since |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–6 s | 6–10 s | 10–22 s | 22–30 s |

**Example hook:** "Every day I edited Reels until 2 a.m. But one day…" **Best for:** Short narrative, brand stories. [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=pixar)

### StoryBrand SB7

Donald Miller's seven-part framework: the customer is the hero, your brand is the guide. A character has a problem, meets a guide who gives them a plan and calls them to action, which helps them avoid failure and ends in success.

| Character + problem | Guide + plan | Call to action | Failure vs success |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–8 s | 8–20 s | 20–25 s | 25–30 s |

**Example hook:** "You want to post consistently, but content eats your weekends." **Best for:** Brand and service explainers. [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=sb7)

### 4 Ps (Promise-Picture-Proof-Push)

Make a promise, paint a picture of the result, back it with proof, then push for the action.

| Promise | Picture | Proof | Push |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–4 s | 4–14 s | 14–24 s | 24–30 s |

**Example hook:** "Give me 10 minutes a day and your Spanish will be conversational by summer." **Best for:** Offers and launches. [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=4ps)

### SCQA

Barbara Minto's consulting structure: the Situation everyone agrees on, the Complication that changes it, the Question that raises, and your Answer.

| Situation | Complication | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–5 s | 5–12 s | 12–15 s | 15–30 s |

**Example hook:** "Interest rates just dropped. So should you refinance now?" **Best for:** Explainers, news, B2B. [Open in the template tool](/video-script-template.html?f=scqa)

## Copywriting frameworks vs storytelling frameworks

|  | Copywriting (AIDA, PAS, BAB, 4 Ps, PSP) | Storytelling (Story Spine, Hero's Journey, SB7) |
|---|---|---|
| **Goal** | One action: save, comment, click | Connection, trust, memorability |
| **Opens with** | A promise or a pain | A character in a situation |
| **Typical length** | 15–45 s | 30–90 s |
| **Risk** | Feels salesy if overused | Runs long if you don't cut |

Hook-Story-Offer sits between the two: a story in the middle, a pitch at the end.

## A universal reel script template

Every framework above fits into this outline. Swap the beat names for your chosen framework.

```
REEL SCRIPT  (framework: ______   length: 30 s / 60 s)
[BEAT 1: HOOK | 0-3 s]
Say:       "[5-12 words: the pain, the promise or the surprise]"
On-screen: [3-6 words]
[BEAT 2: TENSION | 3-12 s]
Say:       "[why it matters: problem, stakes or the start of the story]"
[BEAT 3: VALUE | 12-24 s]
Say:       "[the fix, the steps, the turning point or the proof]"
Show:      [demo / before-after / result]
[BEAT 4: ACTION | 24-30 s]
Say:       "[ONE ask: save / comment ___ / follow / link in bio]"
On-screen: [the ask]
```

## What IShort's reel data shows

59% of the scripts in our sample follow no named framework at all. The most common structures were tutorials (107 reels, 16.4%) and numbered listicles (88 reels, 13.5%, median 275k views). Every other framework on this page matched fewer than 30 reels, so we don't publish per-framework numbers for them yet.

73% of scripts named the topic in their first sentence; the median hook was 12 words.

The median English script was 166 words, spoken at about 3.4 words per second.

Reels that asked for comments drew a median 8.63 comments per 1,000 views, versus 0.55 for reels with no spoken CTA. Median likes-plus-comments engagement was about the same (3.5% vs 3.49%).

| Hook type (first sentence) | Reels | Median views |
|---|---|---|
| Number / list (“5 habits that…”) | 30 | 448k |
| Question (“Ever wondered why…?”) | 82 | 386k |
| Stop / don't (“Stop doing this…”) | 21 | 368k (small sample) |
| Bold claim | 74 | 230k |
| Personal story (“I…”) | 79 | 116k |

*IShort's sample: 1,227 public reels that IShort users chose to transcribe (July–September 2026). 653 transcripts (567 English, 86 Hindi in Devanagari) could be classified by keyword rules. Because users mostly transcribe reels that already did well (median 206k views), treat these as patterns in successful reels, not proof of cause. ## How to find which framework works in your niche

1. **Pick five creators** in your niche and open their public profiles.
2. **Sort their Reels by views** (or by Viral Score, to find posts that beat that account's usual numbers).
3. **Transcribe the top five** and label each beat: hook, tension, value, action.
4. **Count the frameworks.** The one that keeps showing up is your starting point. Write your own version of it.

IShort does steps 2 and 3 inside instagram.com. Transcripts run when you click Transcribe, in English, Hindi and other Indian languages. Read more about [transcribing Reels](/transcribe-instagram-reels.html) or [writing a Reel script](/how-to-write-instagram-reel-script.html).

## When not to use a framework

- **Trends and memes.** The format is the framework. Forcing beats onto a trend makes it feel stiff.
- **Raw, in-the-moment content.** Behind-the-scenes clips work because they aren't scripted.
- **When it makes every Reel sound the same.** Rotate two or three frameworks so your feed doesn't feel formulaic.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best script framework for Instagram Reels?

There is no single best one. PAS suits pain-point tips, AIDA suits products and offers, and a listicle suits quick education. Hook-Story-Offer works when you have a real story and something to sell. Pick the framework that matches the goal of the Reel.

### What is the difference between a copywriting framework and a storytelling framework?

A copywriting framework such as AIDA or PAS moves the viewer toward one action, like a save or a click. A storytelling framework such as the Story Spine or the Hero's Journey builds connection through a character and a change. Hook-Story-Offer combines both.

### How long should a Reel script be?

Most frameworks fit a 30-second Reel: about 3 seconds of hook, then tension, value and one call to action. Story frameworks such as the Hero's Journey or StoryBrand usually need 45 to 60 seconds.

### Can I use more than one framework in a Reel?

Yes. Many Reels use a myth-busting or PAS hook and then a listicle body, or a short story inside the Desire beat of AIDA. Keep one clear order of beats so the viewer never feels lost.

### How do I know which framework works in my niche?

Study the top Reels in your niche. Sort a few creators' public Reels by views, transcribe the top five, and label each beat. The framework that keeps showing up is your starting point. IShort does the sorting and transcripts inside Instagram.
