| Bridge | The method, steps or product that gets them from Before to After. | 15–27 s | 28–54 s |

What is the Before-After-Bridge framework?
BAB comes from direct-response copywriting, where it is used for emails, ads and landing pages. It works because it lets the viewer see the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
Once they see the gap, the Bridge feels like the obvious next step. You never have to hard-sell it.
Before
The problem, stated so precisely the viewer thinks "that's me".
After
The same person, problem gone. Concrete, not "you'll feel amazing".
Bridge
The specific thing that closes the gap. This is your value.
How to use Before-After-Bridge in a Reel
- Open on the Before. The problem is your hook. Say it in the first 2 seconds and put it on screen as text.
- Cut hard to the After. A jump cut, a split screen or a "3 weeks later" caption. Short-form lets you show the transformation instead of describing it.
- Make the Bridge the longest beat. Give 2–3 concrete steps. A vague Bridge ("just be consistent") breaks the whole reel.
- End with one CTA. Tie it to the Bridge: "Save this for your next grocery run."
Tip: film the After first. If you can't show a real, specific After on camera, the framework won't carry the reel. Pick a different one.

Add to Chrome Add to EdgeBefore-After-Bridge vs PAS vs AIDA
All three are problem-first frameworks. The difference is what the middle of the reel does.
| Framework | Middle beat | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Before-After-Bridge | Shows the desired result | Transformations, tutorials, visible results |
| PAS | Makes the pain feel worse | Urgent problems, mistakes, warnings |
| AIDA | Builds interest, then desire | Product launches and offers |
Short rule: if your strongest asset is the After shot, use BAB. If it's the pain, use PAS.
When not to use Before-After-Bridge
- You can't show a real After. Invented results erode trust fast, and some niches (health, money) have platform rules on claims.
- The topic is news or opinion. There is no transformation to show. A myth-busting script fits better.
- You have many small tips. Cramming five fixes into one Bridge blurs it. Use a listicle script instead.
Common BAB mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| The Before is generic ("struggling with money?") | Use one specific moment: "salary gone by the 20th". |
| The After is a feeling, not a result | Name something the camera can see or a number the viewer can check. |
| The Bridge is a teaser for a paid product | Give one usable step in the reel. Put the offer in the caption. |
| Warm-up before the Before | Delete "Hey guys". The problem is the first line. |
What IShort's reel data shows
From IShort's data: Only 5 of 653 classified scripts in our sample followed Before-After-Bridge end to end, too few to publish a reliable number. Most viral reels use a lighter structure, so the useful signal is in how they open:
73% of scripts named the topic in their first sentence; the median hook was 12 words.
The median English script was 166 words, spoken at about 3.4 words per second.
| Hook type (first sentence) | Reels | Median views |
|---|---|---|
| Number / list (“5 habits that…”) | 30 | 448k |
| Question (“Ever wondered why…?”) | 82 | 386k |
| Stop / don't (“Stop doing this…”) | 21 | 368k (small sample) |
| Bold claim | 74 | 230k |
| Personal story (“I…”) | 79 | 116k |
IShort's sample: 1,227 public reels that IShort users chose to transcribe (July–September 2026). 653 transcripts (567 English, 86 Hindi in Devanagari) could be classified by keyword rules. Because users mostly transcribe reels that already did well (median 206k views), treat these as patterns in successful reels, not proof of cause.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Before-After-Bridge framework?
Before-After-Bridge (BAB) is a three-step copywriting formula. Before describes the reader's current problem, After describes the result they want, and Bridge explains how to get from one to the other, usually with your tip, method or product. It is short, which makes it a natural fit for Reels.
How long should each BAB step be in a Reel?
In a 30-second Reel, spend about 8 seconds on Before, 7 on After, 12 on the Bridge and 3 on the call to action. In a 60-second Reel, roughly double each step and give the Bridge the most time, because that is where the useful part lives.
What is the difference between BAB and PAS?
Both start with a problem. PAS (Problem-Agitate-Solution) spends its middle step making the problem feel worse. BAB spends its middle step showing the result the viewer wants. Use PAS when the pain is urgent and BAB when the outcome is the thing that sells.
Can I use Before-After-Bridge for non-product content?
Yes. The Bridge does not have to be a product. It can be a habit, a setting, a script, a routine or a mindset shift. Most educational creators use BAB with a free tip as the Bridge and put any offer in the caption.
Where can I find Reels that already use BAB?
Open a public profile in your niche, sort its Reels by views with the free IShort extension, and transcribe the top performers. Reels that open with a problem and then show a transformation are usually BAB. Reading the transcript shows you how long each step ran.
